Chillingham Castle History
Chillingham Castle is a fine example of a fully fortified defensive castle situated in Northumberland. The castle has been standing since the twelfth century and was passed through the generations of the Earls Grey family.
In the twelfth century the castle is described as been a stronghold, but by the fourteenth century the castle was a fully fortified castle. Main reasons for this include the strategic position of the castle during the Northumberland feuds in the medieval times.
In 1617 James 1 stayed at the castle, this marked more peaceful times for both the country and the castle so much so that the castle was transformed from a stronghold to a family home. The moat was filled in and the battlements no longer needed for battle was converted into residential wings.
A banquet hall and library were also added. Further alterations were made in the eighteenth century with a stairway from the courtyard to the upper floors of the castle was added, and during the mid nineteenth century a servant wing was constructed. The castle grounds were also transformed by Sir Jeffery Wyatville who had just completed his work on Windsor castle.
The castle continued to run as a family home for the Grey family until the Second World War when it was used as army barracks. It was during this time that the castle fell into disrepair, it is reported that the soldiers pulled the decorative wood from the walls and burnt. The lead was also removed from the roof of the property causing severer weather damage inside the property.
The castle continued to fall further into disrepair until it was purchased by its current owners Sir Humphrey Wakefield 2nd Baronet.
Paranormal Activity
The most famous apparition is the 'blue boy' who would cry and moan in agony or maybe fear. The noises could be traced to a spot near a passageway cut through a ten foot wall. Behind the wall the bones of a young boy and fragments of blue clothing were discovered.
Another ghost, Lady Mary Berkeley, searches for her husband, who ran off with her sister. Lady Mary, desolate and broken hearted lived in the castle by herself with only her baby girl as a companion. The rustle of her dress is said to be heard as she passes by in the turret stairs.
Event Includes
Overnight access, cold supper buffet, tea and coffee served throughout the night, demonstration and use of paranormal equipment, ghost walk with our resident medium, psychic workshop, experienced paranormal investigators, late night vigils and paranormal experiments and post event discussions.
