Carbisdale Castle, Sutherland
The castle is said to have several ghosts, phantom bagpipes have been heard and the spirit of a lady dressed in white has been seen in the grounds.
Carbisdale Castle History
The Castle was built between 1906 and 1917 for the Dowager Duchess of Sutherland. Mary Caroline Mitchell's second marriage in 1889 to George Granville William Sutherland Levenson-Gower, 3rd Duke and 18th Earl of Sutherland, made her the Duchess.
She is better known as "Duchess Blair" because of her first marriage to Captain Arthur Kindersely Blair of the 71st Highland Light Infantry, who died in a hunting accident in 1883 near Pitlochry.
Colonel Theodore Salvesen, a wealthy Scottish businessman of Norwegian extraction, bought the castle in 1933. After the Colonel died his son, Captain Harold Salvesen, inherited the castle and gave its contents and estate to the Scottish Youth Hostels Association.
The castle has many interesting features, it has 365 windows, one for each day of the year. There is said to be a secret door below the Grand Staircase which is said to open by rotating one of the statues.
Paranormal Activity
The castle is said to have several ghosts, phantom bagpipes have been heard and the spirit of a lady dressed in white has been seen in the grounds.
The room in the castle which has been the spot of the majority of ghost sightings is the old Nursery or Schoolroom. This is 'The Spook Room' which the bells beside Room 218 refer to. In this room figures have walked around beds which were against the wall, rain has fallen on people, many reports of children's voices and crying have been made and beds have even been turned right round.
Event Includes
Overnight access, cold supper buffet, tea and coffee served throughout the night, demonstration and use of paranormal equipment, ghost walk with our resident medium, psychic workshop, experienced paranormal investigators, late night vigils and paranormal experiments and post event discussions.
