Castle Menzies History
Castle Menzies is situated near the small village of Weem, Aberfeldy in the highlands of Perthshire the castle was previously known as Weem Castle.
Weem Castle or the 'Palace of Weem' was built in 1488, it was burnt down in 1502 and Castle Menzies was built around this time, the exact date is unknown.
This 16th Century Castle has been lovingly restored by the Menzies Clan Society has been the seat of the Cheifs of Clan Menzies for over 400 years. In the 1650's the castle was occupied by troops from Cromwell's army and was captured by the Jacobites in 1715.
Bonnie Prince Charlie rested at the castle on his way to the Battle of Culloden in 1746, shortly after his stay the Menzies family were temporarily evicted from the castle.
The last of the Menzies died in 1918. It was owned by a number of families in the 20th Century and during World War 2 it was used by the Polish Army.
After the war the castle fell into disrepair but was taken over by the Clan Menzies Society and is currently being restored by them.
Paranormal Activity
The castle is said to be rife with paranormal activity. Objects have been known to move on their own and there is said to be 6 major paranormal hotspots within the castle itself. Strange voices have been recorded and temperature fluctuations are common within the castle. Join us at one of Scotland's most haunted locations!
